Low-Tech Tessellation Picture Setup

Low-Tech Tessellation Picture Setup

Here's how I photograph my tessellations. Its a pretty low-tech approach; I tape them to the bottom of a plastic Sterelite drawer, then hook the drawer over a floor lamp, and take a picture. I have found that positioning the design more squarely in front of the main source of light helps give the pleats a more uniform width. I tried taping the designs up in a window to get back lighting, but found that the slant of the sun made too much difference in the width of the pleats. Some would be wide, while the ones on the other side would be narrow. Using the lamp (and a little care in positioning) give much better results. At first I was just taping them onto the lamp shade, but that gave a weird effect from the slight curvature. So the plastic drawer bottom works great as it keeps the models flat :)

Oh, the other thing I do, is to use Photoshop Elements to crop around the edge of the design. Using the "Magnetic Lasso" tool makes this 'fairly' easy (it still takes some work though). It lets you crop out all that ugly plastic drawer and lamp stuff :)
